SUMMARY:Hike Into History: Willie Browne
DESCRIPTION:Join the Timucuan Parks Foundation on a fun walk on a relatively wide natural hiking trail that winds through tall oaks and overlooks vast expanses of salt marsh. The walk will be approximately 1.5 – 2 miles (but you are welcome to continue all the way to Spanish Pond for a ~5-mile walk). Tim Gilmore\, author of “The Wilderness and Willie Browne\,” will share some of his research. \n\n\n\n“Passionate letters of gratitude poured in from all over\, from the Caribbean to the Arctic Circle\, though Willie Browne never traveled further than the Georgia state line\, never had a phone\, nor electricity. He did\, however\, have countless friends. When he died alone in his cabin in the woods in 1970\, he left to the Nature Conservancy hundreds of acres of marshes\, hardwood forest and bluffs overlooking the St. Johns River. Though he would never have chosen it\, his became the face of the conservation movement in much of the South\, beloved of environmentalists and hikers\, artists and writers. Half a century later\, more people know Willie Browne than ever. And they still say they can feel his presence in these woods.”  \n\n\n\nTim’s book is Willie Browne’s story. You don’t have to know all the names of the bees and butterflies\, just what category to put your pollinator under. \n\n\n\nThe pollinator census will be happening at other locations around town on Friday and Saturday morning as well. Hanna Park closes the gate at 7:20 PM\, and late arrivals will not be admitted. DESCRIPTION:Put the phone down for a morning and step outside — nature has a way of putting us right back in the moment. Join Timucuan Parks Foundation for Birding 101\, a beginner-friendly introduction to the wonder of birding\, right here in our own backyard. \n\n\n\nThis is birding for everyone — every background\, every experience level. Whether you’ve never picked up a pair of binoculars or you already know your warblers from your wrens\, all are welcome\, just as you are. Our hope is simple: that you leave a little more enchanted by the natural world than when you arrived. \n\n\n\nWe’ll cover the basics — how to use a field guide\, get comfortable with the Merlin Bird ID app (including Sound ID)\, and hold a pair of binoculars for the first time. We’ll also introduce BirdCast\, a tool used to forecast bird migration in real time\, and talk about what it tells us about the birds passing through Jacksonville along the Atlantic Flyway. Then we’ll head out together for a guided walk to put it all into practice — there’s something truly mesmerizing about slowing down enough to really see and hear what’s already around us.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed for adults\, age 18+. You can learn about the principles of Leave No Trace: Enjoy Nature\, Protect Nature\, hear about what we do as stewards of the parks and preserves\, and how you can become a member. \n\n\n\nPark(ing) Day is a global event where paid car parking spaces are turned into temporary public micro-parks. The purpose is to advocate for more green\, walkable urban spaces.

DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Talbot Islands State Parks invites everyone to the 7th Annual Talbot Tidewater Celebration on Saturday\, Sept. 26. A day full of activities is being planned at The Ribault Club at 11241 Ft. George Rd. on Ft. George Island from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about the islands’ rich Timucuan history\, natural beauty\, and abundant recreational opportunities. Take part in guided hikes\, hands-on activities for kids\, local and state conservation exhibitors\, and more. Stay tuned for details on kid-friendly activities that will require reservations.    \n\n\n\nThe Talbot Tidewater Celebration is held annually on National Public Lands Day and is supported by Florida State Parks\, the National Park Service\, and the Timucuan Parks Foundation.

SUMMARY:Cleanup at Helen Cooper Floyd Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 3 and help us clean up Helen Cooper Floyd Park in Mayport. The work starts at 9 a.m. at the park at 3600 Jimmy Buffett Mem Hwy (A1A) and we will work until approximately 11 a.m.  \n\n\n\nPlease dress accordingly and wear closed-toe shoes. If you have work gloves\, please bring them\, along with a full reusable water bottle. We will provide additional water\, snacks\, work equipment and insect repellent. \n\n\n\nCommunity service hours can be earned while helping with this project. Children under 16 must be supervised by their parent/guardian or scout leader. Anyone under 18 years old must have a parent/guardian’s signature on the liability waiver before starting work. SUMMARY:Young Professionals PEDAL THE PARK
DESCRIPTION:TPF YPs Pedal the Park at Little Talbot Island State Park in July 2024\n\n\n\nJoin the Timucuan Parks Foundation Young Professionals Group (TPF YPs) on Sunday morning\, October 18\, for a leisurely bike ride along the paved Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail. Starting at Camp Milton Historic Preserve\, we will ride to Baldwin (about 6 miles)\, have a snack\, and ride back. \n\n\n\nAll Young Professionals are welcome! Bring a friend and/or meet new people. \n\n\n\nMeet at Camp Milton Historic Preserve\, 1175 Halsema Rd N\, Jacksonville\, FL 32220. We will meet in the parking lot and go from there. \n\n\n\nPROGRAM \n\n\n\nWe will ride through a bit of Camp Milton and then turn off onto the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail. There is a restroom at the turnoff. From there\, we will ride approximately 6 miles west on a paved asphalt surface under a canopy of trees (and some open spaces) to the Town of Baldwin. No rush\, and we can stop and take a break anytime. In Baldwin\, there is another restroom and a playground and picnic area where we can have a snack. Rest up\, and then we will ride back. \n\n\n\nBring a small snack to share and we’ll have a little potluck at the halfway point! No need to bring tons. SUMMARY:Ft. George Inlet Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:We will be cleaning up the Ft. George Inlet on October 22 and we can use your help. Meet us at South end of Little Talbot Island State Park to help us pick up trash. We will be working from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Park just north of the Ft George River in the parking lot on the left side of the road. (If you are coming from downtown\, drive east on Heckscher. From the intersection of I-295 and Heckscher\, it is ~9 miles to the ferry landing and then another 2 miles to bridge over the Ft George River.  After you go over the bridge\, look for the turn off to the left that will take you to the parking lot on the north side of Heckscher Drive\, just east of the Ft George River and bridge. If you get to the entrance to Little Talbot Island State Park\, you have gone too far (we will be working about 3 miles south of the entrance)) \n\n\n\nPlease wear closed-toe shoes\, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and a hat. Bring work gloves if you have them\, sunscreen\, insect repellent and a full reusable water bottle. TPF will provide additional water\, snacks\, work equipment\, and insect repellent. \n\n\n\nVolunteers can earn community service hours.
