SUMMARY:MLK Day of Service 2021
DESCRIPTION:Typically\, Timucuan Parks Foundation hosts a cleanup at a preservation park to honor King and provide a service opportunity to our community. This year\, because we are not able to host an event open to the public\, we encourage you to spend the MLK holiday outside doing something yourself to improve your community. \n\nWe suggest getting a small group of friends or family together to lead a park cleanup of your own. Visit our parks page to pick a location — then grab some trash bags\, gloves\, water and snacks then head out to a local park. \nDedicate your time in support of nature by cleaning up litter on trails\, on shorelines\, or in the parking lots. We encourage you to share pictures from your day of service with us. Tag us on social media with @timucuanparks. \nFor students\, TPF will be kicking off the latest Student Self-Guided Cleanup program on MLK Day. Visit the Self-Guided page for directions on how to earn your community service hours while helping to maintain the health and beauty of our parks and preserves. The Student Self-Guided Cleanup program will run through March 14.

SUMMARY:Spanish-American War Battery public meeting
DESCRIPTION:The National Park Service (NPS) is in the process of developing a planning document to guide access and interpretation of the newly acquired Spanish American War Battery within Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve (TIMU). The Preserve protects some of the last unspoiled Atlantic coastal wetlands\, where there are also several cultural sites of national and state significance. One such historical resource is the Spanish American War Battery\, erected in April 1898 to protect the mouth of the St. Johns River against invasion by the Spanish Fleet. The battery demonstrates the importance of St. Johns Bluff as a military coastal defense position\, where earlier the Confederate Army\, and before that the Spanish and the English\, had maintained forces and/or batteries. The NPS identified acquisition of the battery for protection and interpretation to the public as a top priority in the Preserve’s 1990 General Management Plan (GMP). \nIn support of the process of developing planning documents to guide future use of the property\, you are invited to attend a virtual civic engagement meeting to learn more and to provide your comments and questions about the initial groundwork being developed to inform and guide future planning decisions for the Spanish-American War Battery and its associated landscape. \nGiven the current circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic\,Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve will host the virtual civic engagement meeting on November 12\, 2020\, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM Eastern via Microsoft Teams at \nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_ZWJhMjIyZTEtYjc1NC00NzQzLThkYjctYmQzMDA5ZmI2NDM3%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%220693b5ba-4b18-4d7b-9341-f32f400a5494%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22ca18f473-3406-47d3-8d4c-bcdc2f285292%22%2c%22IsBroadcastMeeting%22%3atrue%7d. \nThe NPS and a team of historic preservation consultants will provide a presentation of work conducted to date. SUMMARY:Ribault’s Landing
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS CANCELED. \nLocal history will come alive at Fort Caroline National Memorial from 10 AM to 3 PM during the annual commemoration of the French naval expedition that landed along the banks of the St. Johns River in the 16th century. \nOn May 1\, 1562\, Captain Jean Ribault\, along with several ships\, landed at the mouth of what is today known as the St. Johns River. Ribault named the river “The River of May.” The landing led to the establishment of La Caroline in 1564\, a settlement that was planned for commerce and as a refuge for French Protestants who were fleeing religious persecution. \nNational Park Service rangers and volunteers dressed in period attire will tell the story of how the French lived and worked in their new settlement. \nLiving history activities will occur throughout the day and historic weapons demonstrations will take place at appointed times. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For more information\, please call  904-641-7155 or visit www.nps.gov/timu.
