It was a cold start with a temperature of 34 degrees, but that didn’t stop 55 volunteers and Timucuan Parks Foundation staff from participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 20. The volunteers, ranging in age from 3 to 77, joined the nonprofit as they picked up trash at Blue Cypress Park and the Arlington Lions Club boat ramp. Seventy-two trash bags were filled with litter from under the boardwalk, in the parking lots and throughout the park.
“We thank all the volunteers who woke up early, braved the cold, and came out and helped us clean up trash and debris throughout Blue Cypress Park, around the shoreline, and near the boat ramp. Obviously, with 72 bags filled, it needed it,” said Felicia Boyd, TPF program and outreach director. “It was so nice to see everyone working together, especially the little ones. It takes a community to keep our parks and preserves healthy and beautiful. We host environmental stewardship projects throughout the year, so we encourage everyone to join us for the next one.”
Families, high school students earning community service hours, TekSystems volunteers, and members of the TPF Trail Team were among the environmental stewards at the MLK Day of Service cleanup.
