Put the phone down for a morning and step outside — nature has a way of putting us right back in the moment. Join Timucuan Parks Foundation for Birding 101, a beginner-friendly introduction to the wonder of birding, right here in our own backyard.
This is birding for everyone — every background, every experience level. Whether you’ve never picked up a pair of binoculars or you already know your warblers from your wrens, all are welcome, just as you are. Our hope is simple: that you leave a little more enchanted by the natural world than when you arrived.
We’ll cover the basics — how to use a field guide, get comfortable with the Merlin Bird ID app (including Sound ID), and hold a pair of binoculars for the first time. We’ll also introduce BirdCast, a tool used to forecast bird migration in real time, and talk about what it tells us about the birds passing through Jacksonville along the Atlantic Flyway. Then we’ll head out together for a guided walk to put it all into practice — there’s something truly mesmerizing about slowing down enough to really see and hear what’s already around us.
This workshop is designed for adults, age 18+. We will have another Birding 101 dedicated specifically for young children and youth in the future.
